Sometimes I get so aggravated with some of my favorite artists that continue to cover their own songs. Seldom do I enjoy hearing them re-recorded or re-worked. I have to say that Carly Simon did justice to making her old music sound fresh enough for me to buy it again. She sounds much more raspy, more rough but yet I found it enjoyable.
I always wonder how many times I have bought a song. Bought it as a 45, and then on an album, then on a CD of the original LP, then on a greatest hits package and then re-worked, remastered or simply re-recorded. I could have up to 7 copies of one song. Thus the reason they do not need to get into the studio and record again anything new.
Her new CD is called Never Been Gone and I would say she is a welcome return to my CD player. I add her next to Brooke White, who has a very familiar feel to that of Carly Simon. I would recommend both to you, if you are avoiding hard thumping ghetto blasting honky tonking tunes. You may remember Brooke White from American Idol fame a few years, I thought she was precious in front of the piano ... so there ya have it, my take on old that is new again ...
